In the Cervelo line-up, the R-Series models represent the lightest and highest performing all-round road race machines that Cervelo produces. While the C-Series carries the endurance road flag for Cervelo, and the S-Series fills the aero race category, the R-Series looks to balance weight, stiffness and compliance in a versatile package that is ideally suited to hard-charging racers and those who love climbing. Perhaps you’re after a weekend warrior machine for longer casual rides with your mates? In that case, the C-Series has got your name all over it. But if you value sharp and snappy steering for fast-paced criterium racing, and numbers like stiffness-to-weight ratios gets your blood pumping, then the thoroughbred R3 is ideally suited to your competitive needs.

Just like the pricier R5, the new R3 draws from the developments Cervelo achieved with its ground breaking Rca frame. While the R3 may not have the same jaw-dropping 667-gram weight figure attached to it, it shares a very similar physique that aims to provide chassis stiffness where it’s necessary, while stripping weight from where it isn’t. To that end, the R3 shares the same pencil-thin seat stays as the R5 and Rca, which offer incredibly low weight and the ability to dissipate the vibrations coming up from the road surface. There’s also the wider BBRight bottom bracket system, which uses a wider junction for increased chassis stiffness. BBRight is ideally suited to BB30 cranks, where the fatter 30mm alloy spindle is not only lighter than comparable 24mm steel spindles, it’s also stiffer under power too. Another area of the latest R3 frame that shows the shared design technology with the Rca and Cervelo’s S-Series frames is the Squoval tubing. Offering a clever blend of square and oval-shaped tubing, the Squoval profile reduces wind drag over the previous R-Series frames, to offer free speed for the R3 rider. Geometry-wise, the R3 and R5 frames are identical. That means you’ve got the same laser-sharp steering on the front of the R3, which allows you to carve through turns with authority, while offering the ability to change line quickly if you need to move out of the bunch and hit the attack button.

Available in both rim brake and disc brake options, the R3 delivers race-winning performance whether you choose Shimano’s mechanical or electronic Ultegra groupsets. The disc model features hydraulic disc brakes that provide increased braking control and sensitivity in a wider variety of conditions.
