Modern aero road bikes are a true technological marvel. Taking a lightweight carbon fibre road-racing frame, and adding aerodynamic features such as a teardrop seat post and a rear wheel cut out, the Cervelo S-Series is a high performance machine that is designed for pure sprinting power and speed. Straddling the gap between the P-Series time trial bike and the R-Series road race bike, the Cervelo S-Series places its emphasis on aerodynamics and stiffness. If you want a comfortable bike for long-distance riding, look elsewhere to the Cervelo C-Series range. If you need the lowest weight possible, then consider the ultralight R-Series. But if you want the maximum stiffness-to-weight ratio, sleek aerodynamics, and razor-sharp handling for cutting up the turns on a fast-paced criterium racecourse, the S-Series is your number in the Cervelo lineup.
In the Cervelo S-Series, there is the top-end S5, the S3 and the entry-level S2. Compared to the S5, the S3 features a unique carbon fibre frame that offers similar aerodynamic performance, but with a greater focus on compliance and rider comfort. The front end is very similar between the S5 and S3 models, with large aerodynamic tubes and a cut out along the downtube to tuck the front wheel in close for reduced wind drag. The key difference between the two models is out the back however, with the S3 using the same rear end as the R-Series models. With significantly thinner seat and chainstay tubing, the S3 is designed to deliver more bump compliance for a smoother and more comfortable ride. Combined with a slightly taller riding position thanks to a taller head tube, the Cervelo S3 is a versatile aero race bike for a wider range of riding conditions and rider types. Of course much of the same performance-enhancing technologies found in other top-end Cervelo frames are also present in the S3. There’s the oversized BBRight system, which has increased bottom bracket stiffness by 16% over the previous S3 model, while the Evolved Steerer Design has also boosted front-end stiffness by over 23%. The result is a stronger and more stable machine for flat-out sprinting efforts, while being smooth and supple enough for long racing stages in the mountains.
