If you’re looking for the pinnacle of aerodynamic racing performance, then look no further than the new Cervelo S5. As one of the original aerodynamic race bikes on the market, the S5 kicked off a trend that pretty much every other cycling brand have since followed. Like those other cycling brands, Cervelo has split its road line-up into specific models to create the best package for tackling specific riding and racing styles. In the case of the S-Series, these bikes are about pure aerodynamic speed and maximum stiffness for hard sprints towards the chequered flag. Believe it or not, about 88% of the energy a rider expends goes towards overcoming aerodynamic drag. A lot of this drag comes from the rider’s themselves, but the bike also has a lot to do with it. The Cervelo S-Series aims to address much of this aerodynamic drag with a slippery frame profile that cuts through the wind to increase speed, so you can go faster with less effort. Because when races are won and lost in tenths, hundreds or even thousands of a second, every advantage makes a difference.
As the top-end model in the S-Series range, the S5 frame and fork are equipped with numerous technologies unique to Cervelo that have been drawn on to create the tightest, stiffest and fastest race bike that the Canadian brand has ever produced. With a unique frame compared to the cheaper S3, the S5 frame is constructed from high-tech carbon fibre, and features a large aerofoil down tube, along with very tight clearances between the front and rear tyres and the chassis. The idea is to allow air to pass over the wheels with less turbulence, to reduce overall drag. The fork crown is semi-integrated into the frame, and a sharp teardrop seat post offers adjustability and integrated aerodynamics with the frame. Even the bottle cage has been factored into the frame shape to better shield it from the wind. Along with the wider BBRight bottom bracket system, tapered carbon steerer tube and full carbon dropouts, the Cervelo S-Series is designed to offer fast wind-cheating performance, whilst retaining the sharp handling and power delivery necessary for race-winning results.
You can get the Cervelo S5 chassis built up with several different build kit options, including the incredible eTAP wireless electronic groupset from SRAM. There are also Shimano build kit options, with the S5 kicking off with a top-value mechanical Ultegra groupset.
