In the cyclocross race scene, the Focus Mares name is both highly regarded and highly successful. Thanks to an ongoing podium presence by the likes of Jeremy Powers and the Rapha-Focus pro team, the Mares has enjoyed much of the spotlight at some of the toughest cyclocross races around the world. Taking many of the technologies found in Focus’ high-end road racing bikes such as the Cayo and Izalco Max, the Mares employs a lightweight full carbon fibre frame and fork that are designed to provide you with maximum power transfer and wicked-fast handling on the racetrack. For riders wanting a no-compromise, purpose-bult cyclocross race bike for rising through the ranks of their local race series, the Focus Mares comes equipped with everything you need, and nothing you don’t.
Like the Izalco Max, the Mares features a full carbon frame that uses high modulus fibres to produce a stiff and lightweight structure. Key junctions are beefed up thanks to a tapered head tube and press-fit bottom bracket, both of which use integrated bearings that are shielded from the elements. Focus has also tucked all of the cables inside the frame, to protect them from the mud and rain you’ll inevitably come across during a cyclocross race. Another detail that shows the Focus engineers attention to race practicality is the R.A.T thru-axle system for the front and rear wheels. 12mm axles help to secure each wheel to the dropouts with improved stiffness and strength, but a clever quick release system means only a short turn is required before the axle comes out, allowing for super fast wheel changes in the pits. Being a purpose-built cyclocross race bike, the Mares features sharp geometry to deliver responsive handling when carving around tight switchbacks. It also has masses of mud clearance, and a wide-profile downtube that helps to shield your face from having mud and dirt flicked up into it. Also worth noting is the carbon Focus seatpost, that uses a hollow upper section to help smooth out bumps and trail impacts.
Focus offer the Mares carbon frame with several build kits, including 1x11 SRAM options and a model with Shimano Ultegra 2x11 shifting.
