One of the newest models to come out of Focus’ headquarters in Stuttgart is the Paralane. Joining the road bike line up alongside the superlight Izalco Max and the Cayo endurance road bike, the Paralane enters the fray as Focus’ adventure road bike. But what exactly is an ‘adventure road bike’ anyway? In essence, the Paralane is an endurance road bike like the Cayo, but with additional tyre clearance, the ability to run full mudguards and even more stable geometry. Thanks to its powerful disc brakes and smooth riding carbon frame, it’s a road bike that is more capable of venturing off the bitumen and onto mixed surfaces. Think dirt paths, rail trails, and country back roads made of course chip seal bitumen. The kind of routes that would scare off normal road bikes. If you’re not so fussed about racing, and you’d rather have a versatile bike that allows you to choose where you want to ride rather than having a stiff frame and skinny tyres dictating what surfaces you can ride on, then the Paralane could be the right choice for you.

The upper Paralane models come equipped with a full carbon fibre fork and frame that take inspiration from Focus’ road racing bikes, while also drawing from the flagship Raven XC hardtail frame. There are 12mm thru-axles front and rear, which help to boost stability between the wheel hubs and the dropouts to eliminate any unwanted wheel flex. An oversized head tube junction provides a stable and sure-footed feel to the Paralane chassis, while the big PF30 bottom bracket maintains solid power delivery. Despite the Paralane’s responsive frameset, Focus has been sure to build in lots of comfort and compliance too. A skinny 25.4mm diameter carbon seatpost uses a hollow upper section to provide a degree of micro-suspension for the rider, while the slender seat stays soak up road vibrations to keep the ride smooth and stable. For added traction and comfort, Focus has spec’d the Paralane with 28c tyres that can be run at lower pressures than traditional width tyres. Want to go wider? The Paralane frame and fork will fit up to a 35c tyre.

The Paralane frameset is available with four different build kits, including the SRAM eTAp equipped model that comes with Fulcrum carbon rims and hydraulic disc brakes as standard.
