If you want a mountain bike but you want the lightest weight possible, then you’ll have your sights set squarely on a carbon hardtail such as the XTC Advanced from Giant Bikes. The XTC is a familiar name for most mountain bikers, as it is by far Giant’s longest running off-road model. The XTC was first introduced in 1999 as a lightweight hardtail that was purpose-built for the fast and furious nature of XC racing. The XTC has evolved somewhat since then, with the latest model offering far greater capability than ever before. It still remains as a lightweight and efficient hardtail that many riders choose for competitive XC racing, but there’s a lot more to the new XTC than that.

As with the new Anthem 27.5, the latest XTC has been redesigned from the ground-up. Built from Advanced-grade carbon fibre, the XTC Advanced 29 offers a rigid and lightweight chassis that delivers excellent power transfer courtesy of the PowerCore bottom bracket junction and massive downtube. Giant have equipped the XTC with Boost thru-axle spacing front & rear, which leads to stronger and stiffer wheels, along with additional tyre clearance at the back. Speaking of, the new XTC can be run in its stock configuration with 29” wheels as a lightweight XC race bike, or you can fit 27.5+ wheels and tyres to add more squish and traction for tackling more technical terrain. The dropouts are horizontal, so you can even set the XTC up as a singlespeed for even greater versatility.

There are four models available in the XTC Advanced 29 range, all of which use the same Advanced composite frame and 29” diameter wheels. Each model features an adjustable 100mm travel fork, a 1x drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes.
