  • Model2018 Epic Hartail Comp
  • Star Rating (4)

Replacing the outgoing Stumpjumper hardtail, the new Epic comes into the Specialized mountain bike range as the lightest, fastest and most precise-handling XC bike they have ever produced. With an entirely new frame constructed from FACT 12m carbon fibre, the S-Works version of the Epic HT comes in at a claimed weight of 890 grams, making it the lightest frame that Specialized has ever produced – and that’s including their Tarmac S-Works road bike frame! While the full-suspension Epic will still appeal to riders wanting the added comfort and stability of a dual suspension bike on rougher and longer racecourses, those who appreciate the outright speed, pedal efficiency and super lightweight of a hardtail will go ga-ga over the new Epic.

Equipped for the demands of flat-out XC racing, the Epic hardtail features a stout and rigid chassis that’s designed to maximise your power output. An oversized bottom bracket junction features large bearings to handle a lighter and stiffer PF30 crankset, while the BOOST 148x12mm thru-axle dropouts increase rear-end stiffness thanks to the shorter chainstay length. Specialized have added sleek internal cable routing to the Epic frame, as well as an integrated bump-stop to prevent the fork crown from contacting the down tube in the event of a crash. Geometry has been updated on the new Epic over the previous Stumpjumper hardtail, with the Epic getting a more stable ride quality thanks to a slacker 69.8-degree head angle and a longer front centre. Despite it’s lightweight and precise handling that makes it fly up the hills, the new Epic is also more competent and faster on the way back down too.

The Epic hardtail is available in multiple options, including the S-Works World Cup model with its SRAM XX1 Eagle 1x12 drivetrain, carbon wheels and RockShox SID fork. Looking for a cheaper entry to the Epic range? The base-level Epic swaps in an alloy frame and a smart parts spec to reach a much more accessible price point.
