The latest S-Works Tarmac is the understated pinnacle of modern road bike technology. Its looks are unassuming, but in the performance stakes it’s second to none! Light as a feather and race-tuned like a Ferrari, the S-Works Tarmac is one of our dream road bikes for 2018. For riders looking for the ultimate allrounder where budget is no object, you must consider this option. You can expect the Tarmac to help you push your PB on the toughest of climbs while also providing outrageous confidence in criteriums as you tip in and out of corners with razor like precision. It’s always tough to justify spending this amount of money on a bike (for some), but a test ride will evaporate any doubts. While we would never condone selling family members, if it meant getting hold of the 2018 S-Works Tarmac, we would understand.
The key design feature of the latest iteration of this legendary road bike is a new carbon layup that has dropped the frame weight below 800 grams. The new FACT 12 carbon frame has taken weight saving to new levels, utilising advanced technology to remove material from absolutely everywhere on the frame that it isn’t adding structural strength. Even the paint technology has gone under the knife, with the Ultralight model finish only adding 10 grams to the overall weight. Another impressive aspect of the 2018 design is the way Specialized has utilised data. Where performance road bikes are traditionally designed using mostly pro-rider feedback, the new Tarmac has incorporated feedback from a more diverse and inclusive audience, including riders just like you. How? The geometry of the 2018 model has been refined using data from thousands of Retül bike fits. This is clever work from the folks at Specialized!
The S-Works Tarmac is decked out with nothing but the highest quality components such as deep 50mm carbon Rovel tubeless wheels on ceramic bearing hubs. The drive train is Shimano Dura Ace but Specialized have opted for their own carbon crankset, which may or may not be a popular choice. Our feeling is that die hard Specialized fans will be okay with it. As you would expect, the cockpit is all high quality Specialized carbon components designed for both speed and comfort, which is just another reason why the S-Works Tarmac is one of our favourite road bikes for 2018.
