In the Trek road bike range, there are three distinct models on offer. For the race heads, there’s the ultra-fast Madone aero race bike. For the climbers, there’s the ultralight Emonda. And for the riders who love long distance riding, there’s the Domane. Built with an emphasis on comfort and versatility, the Domane was originally designed to take on the cobbles of classic one-day races such as the Tour of Flanders and the Paris-Roubaix. The Domane has since evolved into a road bike that is much more than just endurance race though. With added tyre clearance, stable geometry and a more upright riding position, it’s a highly comfortable road bike that is well equipped to take on rough country back roads and even dirt paths too. Throw on a set of full-length mudguards, and you’ve got a speedy winter commuter bike. Fit a set of lighter wheels, and you’re ready to tackle the mountains for the summer riding season. Fit a set of 30c file-tread tyres, and you’ve got a comfortable bike for taking on dirt based adventure rides. The Domane really can do it all.

The Domane ALR is one of the newest models in the Domane range, sitting beneath the Domane SLR, SL and S series models. Like the Emonda ALR, the Domane ALR features an alloy frame, rather than the carbon frame found on the pricier models. Despite prior understandings of alloy road bikes, modern aluminium construction has evolved significantly over the past decade, and it shows in the latest Domane ALR. Using Alpha 200 alloy, the Domane ALR uses highly manipulated tube profiles that oversize each tube where additional stiffness is required, while thinning out areas such as the seat stay tubes to help encourage vibration dissipation. Also assisting with comfort is the IsoSpeed Decoupler, which builds a pivot into the seat and top tube junction. This decouples the seatpost from the rest of the frame, isolating the rider from irregularities on the road surface for added comfort. Despite the Domane’s smooth ride, Trek has still designed it as a high-performance road bike. Features such as the powerful hydraulic disc brakes, front and rear thru-axles, wide press-fit bottom bracket and tapered E2 head tube ensure the Domane ALR chassis is tight and responsive. Combined with its stable geometry, this is a machine that loves to be ridden at speed, and particularly down long mountain descents.

Equipped with a full Shimano 105 11-speed drivetrain, the Domane ALR 5 Disc features a carbon fork, tubeless compatible Bontrager wheels and smooth hydraulic disc brakes from Shimano.
